ABSTUDY is a scheme of payments for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians undertaking study or training. It provides similar income support to Youth Allowance and Austudy but with additional allowances and benefits specific to the needs of Indigenous students, including those studying at secondary and tertiary levels.
What Is ABSTUDY?
ABSTUDY is not a single payment — it is a scheme that includes several types of support:
| Award | Who it’s for |
|---|---|
| Living Allowance | Income support for eligible students (similar to Youth Allowance/Austudy) |
| Schooling A Award | Secondary students aged under 21 |
| Schooling B Award | Secondary students aged 21+ |
| Tertiary Award | Students in tertiary education (TAFE, university) |
| Masters and Doctorate Award | Postgraduate students |
| Australian Apprentices Award | Students on apprenticeships/traineeships |
Key Eligibility Criteria
To receive ABSTUDY, you must:
- Identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person
- Be accepted as such by the community in which you live or have lived
- Be an Australian resident
- Be studying an approved course at an approved institution
- Meet any income tests that apply to your award
ABSTUDY Living Allowance Rates (FY2025–26)
Living Allowance rates under ABSTUDY are broadly similar to Youth Allowance and Austudy:
| Situation | Fortnightly rate (approx.) |
|---|---|
| Student aged under 18, living at home | ~$376 |
| Student aged under 18, living away from home | ~$593 |
| Independent student | ~$693 |
| Partnered | ~$625 |
Rates are indexed and subject to individual circumstances. Check servicesaustralia.gov.au/abstudy.
Additional ABSTUDY Benefits
ABSTUDY provides several benefits beyond what is available under Youth Allowance or Austudy:
Fares Allowance: helps cover the cost of travel between your home and place of study. This is particularly important for students in remote areas who may need to travel long distances.
Away from Home rate: students who need to move away from home to study may qualify for a higher payment rate.
Lawful Custody Allowance: additional support if you are undertaking study while in lawful custody.
Pensioner Education Supplement: additional support for eligible ABSTUDY recipients.
Group 2 School Fees Allowance: helps cover school fees for secondary students.
Residential Costs Option: an alternative to Living Allowance for students in residential facilities, which can cover accommodation costs directly.

FAQ
Do I need to prove my Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander identity? Services Australia requires you to self-identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person and to be accepted as such by the community where you live. Documentary proof of heritage (such as a statutory declaration from a community organisation) is often required.
Can I receive ABSTUDY if I am studying online or by distance education? Yes — distance education and online study can qualify, provided the course is approved. The Fares Allowance may not apply if you are not required to travel.
Can I receive ABSTUDY and Youth Allowance at the same time? No — you can only receive one of these payments at a time. ABSTUDY often provides more generous support and additional allowances, so it is generally worth applying for if you are eligible.
