The Departing Australia Superannuation Payment (DASP) allows eligible temporary residents who have left Australia to claim their accumulated superannuation. If you worked in Australia on a temporary visa and paid super, you may be entitled to claim it back after you leave.
Who Can Claim DASP?
You can claim DASP if you meet all of the following:
- You held a temporary visa (not a permanent visa or Australian/NZ citizenship) at some point while you worked in Australia
- You have left Australia permanently
- Your visa is no longer active (expired, cancelled, or you are no longer in Australia)
- You have not become a permanent resident or Australian citizen
Who cannot claim DASP:
- Australian citizens or permanent residents (they must retain their super until preservation age)
- New Zealand citizens (special rules apply — see NZ Citizens and Super)
- Holders of a working holiday visa who are NZ citizens
How to Apply for DASP
Option 1: ATO Online DASP Application (Recommended)
- Leave Australia permanently
- Wait for your visa to expire or be cancelled (or have it cancelled intentionally by the Department of Home Affairs)
- Go to the DASP Online Application at the ATO website (ato.gov.au → Super → DASP)
- Log in with myGovID or your TFN
- Provide your TFN, date of birth, passport details, fund details, and bank account (can be overseas)
- Submit the application — the ATO processes and notifies your fund
- The fund releases the super (minus DASP withholding tax) to your nominated account
Option 2: Apply Directly to Your Fund
You can also apply directly to your fund using their DASP form. This is less common but available if the ATO online system doesn’t suit your circumstances.
What You Receive
Your DASP payment includes:
- Your accumulated super balance
- Less DASP withholding tax (see DASP Tax Rates)
- Less any outstanding insurance premiums or fees
You cannot receive the ATO-held super (unclaimed super) via DASP through the fund — you must claim ATO-held super separately through the ATO DASP portal.
DASP and ATO-Held Super
If any of your super was transferred to the ATO as lost/unclaimed super, you must claim it from the ATO directly (not from the fund). The ATO DASP application covers both fund-held and ATO-held amounts — use the online system to identify and claim both.
Timing: When to Apply
- You can apply for DASP up to 6 months before your visa expires (some circumstances)
- Most common approach: apply after leaving Australia once the visa is expired or cancelled
- There is no deadline for DASP applications — you can apply years after leaving
Bank Account for DASP Payment
Your DASP payment can be sent to:
- An Australian bank account you still hold
- An overseas bank account (international transfer — check for any ATO bank transfer fees)
